BIOGRAPHY

About David Spischak in a nutshell

David Spischak, bassist, double bassist and musicologist was born on August 9, 1980 in Budapest. He spent his childhood and youth in Budapest and Nuremberg, Germany.

From 2000 he studied music at the Department of Musicology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in Erlangen, then continued his studies in the Musicology Department of the University of Trondheim (NTNU - Trondheim) in Norway, where he focused primarily on developing his performing skills on bass and double bass. He passed the Master of Arts exam in 2005.

He returned to Budapest in 2006, where he has been an active contributor to bands playing and forming in various musical genres ever since. After ten years, he returned to studying, graduating with an MA degree in music performance and theory from the Jan Albrecht Academy of Music in Banska Stiavnica.

Dávid Spischák can be heard in many other formations, but he is active not only as an instrumental performer, but also as a musicologist. Within the framework of the scholarship program of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, he prepares the Karl Trautsch  Complete Edition, which will present the life and works of Karl Trautsch, Hungary's first double bass teacher, in several planned volumes.

ABOUT THE BAND

Spischak Quartet

The Spischak Quartet is an exciting ensemble formed by outstanding performers, based in Budapest, Hungary, one of the exciting jazz formations of contemporary Hungarian jazz, which combines the traditions of the genre with a fresh, modern sound and open musical thinking, and represents both the freedom of improvisation and sophisticated chamber music playing.
The backbone of the quartet's repertoire are compositions by David Spischak, which combine striking themes, rich harmonies and dynamic rhythms, giving room for spontaneous musical dialogues and creative improvisation. The sound of the band is shaped into a uniform and characteristic soundscape by the lyrical yet energetic playing of the saxophone and guitar, and the dynamic and sensitive accompaniment of the rhythm section.
At their concerts, the balance between carefully constructed compositions elaborated in shopwork and improvisations born in the magic and sometimes heat of the moment creates a simultaneously profound and liberated atmosphere. The Spischak Quartet has performed on many stages in Hungary and has even toured Slovenia and South Korea with great success. Its performances in Hungarian clubs and on international stages have proven that their music is able to address listeners who have been committed to jazz for a long time and also those who are just discovering the world of the genre.

The history of the band actually started almost a decade and a half ago, then with a tenor saxophone, piano, bass guitar and drums, active for years with varying intensity. As a result of a paradigm shift, the new line-up differs from the previous one in several respects: a new approach dominates in making music together and in terms of exploiting and expanding creative capacities, which partly requires other, sometimes unusual workshops based on different principles, processes and doctrines. The piano as a chordal instrument was replaced by the guitar, but of course this does not exclude the occasional member of the band from playing keyboards.

The guitarist of the band is Zsolt Csizmár, currently studying as a jazz guitar teacher at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music and student of Sándor Horányi. In addition to his interest in jazz and free music, he is also active as a rock musician, a member of the art-rock band Cataflamingo, and a teacher at the Martonvásár Music School.

Balázs Raboczki, the saxophonist of the band studied at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music as a student of Mihály Borbély and István Elek, and in addition to contemporary music, he is also interested in Balkan, Hungarian and surrounding folk music, and even in Indian classical music. He is involved in many formations and is the artistic director of the bands Jazz Friends and Mordent Quintet.

Márton Szilágyi occupies the drummer’s position, who as a child of music teacher parents, has been involved in music since he was very young. He started playing drums at the age of 14 with private teachers and then at the Kőbánya Music Studio. He graduated as a performing artist at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, where his teachers were Ákos Benkó, György Jeszenszky and Attila Gyárfás. Currently, it can be heard in many actively performing formations.
